First in US to Complete RxSight Light Adjustable Lens Surgery in Study on Post Refractive Eyes!

Yesterday, on August 28th, 2018, history was made here at Slade & Baker Vision in Houston, Texas!

We were the first practice in the United States to complete successful surgeries in a clinical trial of RxSight’s Light Adjustable Lens on post refractive surgery eyes.  Two surgeries were completed and we want to wish a warm congratulations to our study patients, Dr. Stephen Slade, and our clinical team!

What is a Light Adjustable Lens?  We are SO excited to explain.

RxSight’s Light Adjustable Lens is the only intraocular lens (IOL) for cataract surgery that can be adjusted after it has been implanted in the eye.

Why is this lens different from other IOL’s used in cataract surgery?

Well, let’s start with how it works:  A patient has cataract surgery, and the surgeon puts this lens in.

After the eye has healed from surgery, the patient returns to the clinic to have a routine eye exam. Based on the results of the exam, the new lens is non-invasively exposed to UV light through a microscope in the doctor’s office. The special material of RxSight’s lens reacts to the UV light and changes shape based on the prescription selected during the eye exam.

The study is ongoing, but we expect the first light treatments to take place in about three weeks!   This is a HUGE day not only for our practice, but for ophthalmology in general!

Patients are constantly trying to get their prescription right after cataract surgery, and this can be even more challenging for patients who have had prior refractive surgery (such as LASIK, which changes the shape of the cornea).  While there have been many incredible advances in lens technology over the years, the ability to adjust the lens to the correct refractive error after surgery offers a potential breakthrough for cataract patients, and we are delighted to announce our participation!

Please note that as with most procedures, not every patient is a candidate for the RxSight LAL clinical study, but if you would like to know whether you may be, please call our office at 713-626-5544 today!

We are happy to speak to you to see if you are a candidate and can schedule an evaluation at our Houston office.
