Broken glasses on the ground

We see so many patients day in and day out who tell us they ‘can’t see’ without their glasses. But can you function without your glasses? How about not being able to ever wear sunglasses?

We also see so many who ask us what it takes to be a LASIK candidate. David’s prescription was -21/.5 OS and -20 OD and his story is a great testament to someone who was not a LASIK candidate.

We asked David what prompted him to come see us and he shared – “I couldn’t do anything without my glasses. If I lost them I would basically be blind. I would have to have people help me find them.’

David had been to a few different eye doctors, and they recommended he come to see our specialists at Slade & Baker Vision Center in Houston.

At his first appointment for his refractive surgery consultation or ‘LASIK screening’ he was examined closely, and several tests were run on his vision. The doctors confirmed that because of his very high myopia, he was certainly not a LASIK candidate, and that his best option would be ICL over LASIK. “We discussed everything, what all the options were and decided on ICL which sounded pretty promising.”

Many of you know LASIK, but do you know ICL?

What is ICL?

The EVO Visian ICL is an implantable contact lens which corrects vision without removing any corneal tissue. It is a particularly good solution for people with thin corneas, dry eyes, or a high prescription.   Slade & Baker Vision has one of the longest experiences with ICL’s and for more information on the ICL, click here to visit our ICL page.

Some benefits of ICL are excellent night vision, protection from UV rays and no removal of corneal tissue.  Although David’s ultra-high prescription can’t fully be covered by ICL, he had a quick laser/LASIK procedure after his ICL procedure to get him to his goal of no more glasses.

Surgery day for David was “quick and easy, a little uncomfortable but not too bad whatsoever.  Going in I was nervous and excited since I’ve been wearing glasses since the age of 3. I was excited not to wear glasses at all or even a smaller prescription. Up until the anesthesia, I was nervous, but it was all quick.

Right After ICL Surgery

“Right after surgery, I saw way better than I did. I am extremely happy with it. I can actually function without my glasses; I don’t have to freak out if they fall off or if I lose them. I can walk around and do things and not wear glasses. My whole life I have never even been able to wear sunglasses, and now I can.”

“Dr. Walton was my surgeon, he was really thorough about what to do, what not to do and how things were going to go. Dr. Walton is a very nice person, was so good throughout the whole process and everyone at Slade and Baker has been friendly and helpful.”

We loved hearing from David about his experience and hope this helps someone out there who has a really high prescription and feels disappointed by the thought they don’t have ‘hope’ without LASIK.  The EVO ICL is an incredible way to get rid of your glasses and contacts, and it is offered at our office.
